On October 18, 2024, the "2024 UK-Chongqing Industrial Heritage Protection and Regeneration Workshop " jointly organised by the UK Department for Business and Trade, Chongqing Industrial Culture Association and Savills, was successfully held in Chongqing. Industry experts from the UK and Chongqing in the field of industrial heritage protection and utilization gathered to share experiences and success stories in industrial heritage protection and regeneration, while exploring future cooperation opportunities. Dr. Henry Yang, Managing Director of Haskoll China, was honoured to be invited to attend the event.
"Industrial heritage is not just a relic of the past, but a testament to the social and economic development of human society. The UK has a long-standing tradition of preserving and regenerating industrial heritage, while Chongqing also boasts a rich industrial history. Exploring methods for the regeneration and design of these heritages is of great significance for promoting a low-carbon society and protecting industrial heritage," said Anthony Preston, British Consul-General in Chongqing. He emphasized the vast potential for cooperation between the UK and Chongqing in the areas of industrial heritage and urban renewal, suggesting that both sides can work together to promote innovation and sustainable development.
At the workshop, industry experts from the UK and Chongqing in the field of industrial heritage protection and utilization discussed topics such as the protection and use of the UK's industrial heritage and the current status and future outlook of Chongqing's industrial heritage protection. They suggested that the preservation and utilization of industrial heritage must be based on the principle of protection, balancing both quality and quantity. It is important to consider current trends in the cultural tourism market and carefully choose different mediums for presenting industrial heritage. When planning creative ideas and supporting infrastructure, it is crucial to connect industrial heritage with nearby cultural and tourism projects, forming a cohesive narrative. In particular, for industrial heritage that embodies the legacy of national industry, there is a need to further explore its historical and cultural significance.
During the event, the "UK-China Urban Renewal White Paper" (referred to as the "White Paper"), jointly compiled by the UK Department for Business and Trade, Savills, and China Huajian Group's East China Architectural Design Institute, was officially released. The White Paper summarizes the similarities and differences in the urban renewal development trajectories of the UK and China, aiming to stimulate innovative potential in the field of urban renewal. Additionally, Savills signed a cooperation memorandum with the Chongqing Industrial Culture Association, with both parties committed to promoting the preservation and utilization of Chongqing's industrial heritage and facilitating cultural exchanges in industrial heritage.
