The Case Study of Urban Renewal in UK

Due to the word limit, this article only provides a brief summary of the main content. We apologize for any inconvenience caused.

Under the severe impact of the pandemic and e-commerce, an increasing number of commercial spaces, offices, and factories are left vacant. Along with messy layouts and poorly planned transportation, these fragmented and negative spatial scenes are gradually causing our cities to lose vitality, and residents find it difficult to feel the warmth and sense of belonging that cities should bring. Haskoll, as a globally renowned commercial architecture and design company, believes that urban renewal can effectively improve the quality of urban space. Urban renewal requires the joint efforts of government laws and regulations, urban managers, operators, design planners, and users to shape a lively spatial ecology. As a design participant, Haskoll hopes to be the conduit for all parties' elements and the transformation of spatial ecology, providing users with warm and sustainable urban space through professional capabilities.

Through Haskoll's analysis and introduction of outstanding cases at home and abroad over the years, we have summarized some experiences and lessons for urban renewal for everyone to explore. First, the basic function of the city is to provide residents with a safe place to live and complete commercial exchanges, as well as shared public places for urban public functions, including cultural, educational, medical, and other functions, while also reflecting the natural, economic, and historical and cultural characteristics of the region. Traditional Chinese urban planning basic elements are based on the courtyard architecture of families, but with the rapid economic development and disintegration of the concept of family, the rapid urbanization process brings us the uniformity of urban development and construction, lacking the continuity of culture and history. Haskoll has led many urban renewal projects in the UK, especially revitalizing cities through commercial and leisure activities, including the Reading city center renewal project, Birmingham Central Station, London Victoria Station, and Angle commercial and leisure projects, which are excellent cases of urban renewal.

Through case studies, we believe that urban renewal needs to focus on the following five aspects:

·  City industry development positioning and functional planning

·  Urban infrastructure, transportation, and slow traffic system construction

·  Urban morphology and urban space research

·  Low-carbon and sustainable development demands, low-carbon, and continuity of culture

·  The creation of vibrant urban spatial ecology
